Changes to the University of Ottawa Retirement Pension Plan

Changes to the University of Ottawa Retirement Pension Plan will be taking effect soon. Here are the main changes affecting you. Please keep a copy of this message for your records.

Your required contribution
On January 1, 2015 and January 1, 2016, your required contribution to the plan will increase. Here are the new member contribution rates: Up to integration level (see definition below) (2015 currently set at $37,793; 2016 to be determined)

  • Up to integration level (see definition below) (2015 currently set at $37,793; 2016 to be determined)

o     Effective January 1, 2015, 4.85% on cumulative earnings

o     Effective January 1, 2016, 5.45% on cumulative earnings

  • Above the integration level (see definition below) (2015 currently set at $37,793; 2016 to be determined)

o     Effective January 1, 2015, 7.50% on cumulative earnings

o     Effective January 1, 2016, 8.45% on cumulative earnings

You don’t need to do anything to increase your contributions. Effective the first full pay period after January 1, 2015, the amount deducted from your pay will be adjusted automatically. Please note that the integration level for 2016 will only be determined at the end of 2015 and will affect your first full pay period after January 1, 2016.

[Integration level: The University pension plan provides for a pension that differs for the portion of your earnings below and above a certain threshold. Your contributions to the plan also depend on the threshold — you pay less on the portion below the integration level and more on the portion above it. The earnings threshold is based on the maximum earnings covered for the purposes of determining your pension from the Canada/Quebec Pension Plan. It differs for service before and after January 1, 2004. In 2014, the integration level used to calculate your contributions was $37,311.]
